Kano governor cracks down on LGBTQ groups

Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State has instructed the state Hisbah Board to take action against groups suspected of promoting LGBTQ rights in the state.

This directive comes amidst rising tensions over the activities of such groups, particularly one codenamed “WISE” or “Women Initiative for Sustainable Empowerment and Equality,” which allegedly advocates for same-sex marriage.

Commissioner for Information Baba Dantiye confirmed the governor’s directive in an interview with The PUNCH on Monday.

He stated that the activities of WISE are a breach of the state’s moral standards and a violation of Shari’ah law.

The governor emphasized that Kano would not tolerate any agreements or activities that support LGBTQ rights, as they contradict the values of the predominantly Muslim population.

“The governor has expressed his disapproval of any agreement promoting LGBTQ activities, assuring there is no room for such immorality in Kano,” Dantiye said. He added that the Hisbah Board has been directed to investigate and take appropriate legal action against these groups.

Furthermore, consultations are ongoing with religious leaders to address and curb these activities within the state. WISE, an NGO advocating for lesbian, bisexual, and queer rights, is reportedly a successor to Women Action for Gender Equality.
