Sultan declares July 7, 2024, as start of Islamic year 1446

The Sultan of Sokoto and President General of the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has officially announced that Sunday, July 7, 2024, will mark the beginning of the Islamic year 1446 after Hijrah, known as Muharram.

The declaration was made in a statement issued by Sambo Junaidu, Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs, Sultanate Council, Sokoto, on Friday.

According to Junaidu, no credible reports of moon sightings were received by the national and various moon sighting committees across Nigeria on Friday, July 5, 2024, corresponding to the 29th of Dhul’Hijja 1445 AH.

Therefore, Saturday, July 6, 2024, is recognized as the 30th of Dhul’Hijja.
