The Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC) has insisted that the 5G network infrastructure is safe and there should be nothing to fear.

The Executive Vice Chairman of the Commission, Prof. Umar Danbatta gave the assurance today when he appeared before the Joint Senate and House of Representatives Committee on Communications to defend its 2022 budget defence.

Reacting to fears in the public domain about the safety of the 5G network infrastructure by the panel, Danbatta stressed that it was mere rumour, assuring that it is a new technology and is safe anywhere.

He said the NCC had shared the same concern but noted that the Commission would not be so careless with the lives of Nigerians, adding that it was the reason they have embarked on aggressive sensitisation of Nigerians on the value of the 5G network.

“Up till date, there is no credible evidence about the health hazard of the 5G technology, therefore it is safe.”

He stressed that the 5G Spectrum network is good for the economy and the nation’s social transformation.

He also disclosed that with the launch of the Computer Incidence Response Team, telecommunications networks across the country are secured against any form of cyberattacks.

On the 2022 Budget Proposal, he said a total of N632.39 billion is proposed as revenue generation by the commission.

He said the revenue would be realised through the sale of network, fines among others.

For the Commission’s main budget, a sum of N86.2 is proposed for recurrent expenditures, N29.36 Billion is for Capital while N2.55 Billion is earmarked for special projects.

Prof. Umar Danbatta earned his Bachelor’s and master of sciences and engineering from the Technical University of Wroclaw and holds a PhD of science and technology from the University of Manchester.[
