It’s not always going to be roses and smiles. You can follow all the rules, read all the inspirational quotes you can find and start everyday with a smile, but there are still going to be times when you feel a bit under the weather. We’re not talking about the occasional cold or flu; this is about feeling down and even depressed. Maybe you lost a loved one or you experienced a setback in your professional life.

As they say, sh_t happens. It’s inevitable. Just don’t take it too hard, and in fact, use these suggestions to get back on track.

  1. Take stock of the good people around you. Chances are that you feeling down will bring down the people around you, too. Consider the positive people in your life and spend some time with them. It will probably be uplifting to spend time with a little one playing a simple game of hide and seek. A child’s laughter is contagious. Or you can go visit Mom or Grams to enjoy a home-cooked meal. The point is to break away for a bit and enjoy the company of some positive people.

  2. Remember the good times. Wasn’t it just last week that you got a promotion? Didn’t you just come off of a great holiday weekend with family and friends? Think about the good stuff, such as positive achievements you’ve already made in your quest to be a superstar in your field. Thinking about how far you have come will lift you up and inspire you to dig right back in and move forward.

  3. Focus on your strengths. Bet there is something amazing you did that others were unable to achieve. There’s a big report due next week, and only you know how to make the graphics it needs shine. God gave you a special talent, a gift, and when the world looks gloomy, it’s time to think about how special you are and what amazing things you are capable of doing.

  4. Compare. This sounds like a broken record. Remember when Mom told you to eat your cauliflower because there were kids on the other side of the world that were going without? There’s actually some validity to this motivational tool. Think about how better off you are than other people. There are gifted and college-educated people in this world that are homeless or don’t have a job. There’s a myriad of examples of people who don’t have it as good as you do.

  5. Think about how you overcame a dip before. Chances are you have faced adversity before. Remember how you lifted yourself out of it. And think about how little significance this one setback has on the big picture. We’re not saying you have to minimize everything, especially if someone dear to you has passed. We’re saying that you have gotten through things like this before, you will do it again.

The simplest thing to do is to close your eyes and let the adversity pass. But you can also take action to rise back up and tackle life with even more knowledge and experience now under your belt.
