The operation of illegal rehabilitation centres in the state had earlier been barred by the Kano state government in November 2019.
The Police Command’s spokesman, DSP Abdullahi Haruna, confirmed the report. He said that two of the centre operators have been arrested and would be prosecuted when investigations are over.
DSP Abdullahi Haruna said that the 47 inmates rescued were all males between the ages of 12 and 30. According to him, the victims were rescued from centres located at Yar Akwa, Ungwar Uku, Tarauni local government area of Kano.
According to the Police PRO, the victims had to be rushed immediately to the Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital. He said they were weak and in poor health due to the torture that must have been inflicted on them by the rehab center operators.
“They are looking emaciated, with varying degree of injuries, due to brutalization and torture by the operators of the rehab centre,’’ he said.
