Christabel Buoro, twenty-one-year-old, a student of the University of Benin, allegedly committed suicide on Tuesday over a failed love affair.

The lifeless body of the 300-level student of Medical Laboratory was discovered on Tuesday at her hostel located on Plot 4 Uwaifo Lane, off Newton Street, Ekosodin, a sprawling students’ community behind the Ugbowo campus of the university.

Unconfirmed reports had it that Christabel mixed an insecticide, popularly called Sniper, with a soft drink, which she allegedly took.

An empty sachet of detergent was found inside the room. A source in the compound told our correspondent that Christabel’s corpse was later discovered.

He wondered how “a small girl of that age will take her life, all because of one boy.”

The source stated, “Policemen, who came to evacuate the body, were very angry after reading out aloud the suicide note she dropped in which she stated that she was about to take her life, because the guy she loved did not love her in return and had broken up with her.

“Thank God she even left a note; if not, her roommates would have been in trouble, because investigation would have begun from them.”

When contacted, the Public Relations Officer, UNIBEN, Michael Osasuyi, said the institution was waiting to be briefed about what really happened, since the incident did not occur on the school premises.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Chidi Nwanbuzor, said, “The suicide note was incoherent.”

Nwanbuzor stated that the police had begun investigation to unravel what made the deceased to take her own life.

He confirmed that the corpse had been recovered but declined comment on whether autopsy would be carried out or not. He also dismissed rumours that some suspects had been arrested in connection with the incident.
