29-Yoruba agitators arrested on Treason charges
Twenty-nine individuals suspected of affiliation with the Yoruba Nation movement faced charges in an Ibadan Chief Magistrate Court on Wednesday, stemming from their alleged involvement in the thwarted incursion of the Oyo State Government Secretariat on April 13.
Presented with a seven-count charge, the accused were accused of offenses including treasonable felony, membership in an unlawful society, illegal possession of firearms, carrying weapons, and behavior likely to incite a breach of peace.
Inspector Bakare Rasaq of the State Criminal Investigation Department, Iyaganku, Ibadan, serving as the Investigative Police Officer, highlighted that the charges brought against the suspects were in violation of Section 516 of the Criminal Code, Cap 38, Vol.II, Laws of Oyo State of Nigeria, 2000.
The legal proceedings, under case number Mi/520c/2024, were initiated by the Commissioner of Police against the 29 individuals, marking a significant development in the ongoing tensions surrounding the Yoruba Nation movement.
