2023: Moghalu gets dumped out of Presidential race
This past week has been all about the future of Nigeria and the 2023 general elections. A cast of characters and individuals from different parties have come forth to declare their mandate and claim a place at the ASO Villa.
But one person who won’t be in the race this coming months is popular activist, Kingsley Moghalu who had failed to clinch on the ticket of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
He was beaten to the race by Roots TV CEO, Dumebi Kachikwu.
Mr Kachikwu was reported to have scored 977 votes against Mr Moghalu’s 589 votes with Chukwuka Monye coming third with 339 votes at the primary exercise in Abeokuta on Wednesday night.
Mr Kachikwu is known as the younger brother of former minister Ibe Kachikwu.
Moghalu recently ran for president under a different platform of the Young Democratic Party (YDP) in 2019 but defected to the ADC after a leadership crisis in the YDP.
He was though considered favourite to clinch the ADC ticket but was pipped to it by Dumebi in the election, though as with Nigerian politics, some would allege was influenced by money.
“I appreciate Prof. Moghalu and other credible aspirants for a spirited fight even though we didn’t make it. The fight to rescue this country from the brink of disaster is still on…. Monye is committed to this” Mr Monye said. “Will communicate who we will support.”
Mr Moghalu, an economist and former deputy governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, had said he was prepared to retire Atiku Abubakar and Bola Tinubu and set Nigeria on the path of prosperity
