2 killed, 13 severely injured in Memphis supermarket mass shooting
A gunman has opened fire inside a Kroger grocery store in a Memphis, Tennessee suburb, killing one person and injuring 13 others before he shot and killed himself.
The shooting was reported around 1.30 p.m. on Thursday, September 23, at the supermarket located 30 miles east of Memphis, Tennessee. This follows after shooting 13 people, some bearing serious wounds.
Police authorities said the suspected shooter died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
According to the Collierville police, 12 of the injured, were evacuated to the hospital. One of the injured walked into the hospital himself.
According to ABC News, when the shooting broke out at about 1.30 p.m, some hid in freezers and locked offices. One employee fled to the roof and was escorted to safety by police.
Collierville Police Chief Dale Lane said in a press conference: “It breaks my heart to have to stand before you today. We’ve had an incident here in Collierville that has occurred all over the country.” Lane added: “This is the most horrific event to happen in Collierville history.”
The suspected shooter’s car remains in the store parking lot, police said. Resources are being brought in to safely inspect the vehicle.
Collierville is about 30 miles from Memphis. Memphis police said its officers are helping secure the scene.
The FBI and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are also on the scene.
Brignetta Dickerson, a 33-year-old Kroger employee, told reporters that she saw one of her coworkers shot in the head and a customer shot in the stomach after the gunfire began in the deli.
Authorities said the shooter turned the gun on himself after killing one person and injuring multiple people.
The Shelby County Sheriff’s office is helping with the investigation. Law enforcement officials believe the gunman acted alone.
