180 members of minority caucus demand Nnamdi Kanu’s release

In a significant move, 180 members of the minority caucus of the 10th House of Representatives have endorsed a motion for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

This decision was announced by lawmaker Obi Aguocha during a caucus meeting on Monday.

Aguocha, who represents Ikwuano, Umuahia North, and Umuahia South Federal Constituency, emphasized the urgency of addressing the Kanu case and advocated for a political solution. He urged his colleagues to take a firm stance on the matter, highlighting the need for a strategic and peaceful resolution.

This endorsement follows Aguocha’s recent discussions with former President Muhammadu Buhari, successful mobilization of 50 colleagues from various parties, and support from the southeast caucus of the National Assembly.

In his address, Aguocha stressed the importance of a united approach within the minority caucus, noting that resolving Kanu’s case is vital for national peace and unity. He called for immediate engagement with key stakeholders to pursue a political solution rather than a prolonged legal battle.

Aguocha highlighted the potential benefits of dialogue and reconciliation, suggesting that such an approach could enhance national integration and restore trust among communities. He stated, “Today, opposition parties have taken a decisive stand on issues including Nnamdi Kanu, planned protests, insecurity, and the state of infrastructure and the economy. This call to action underscores the legislative body’s crucial role in promoting peace and stability.”

The minority caucus, which supports Aguocha’s motion, includes members from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with 115 seats, Labour Party (LP) with 35 seats, New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) with 19 seats, All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) with 5 seats, Social Democratic Party (SDP) with 2 seats, Young Progressives Party (YPP) with 2 seats, and the African Democratic Congress (ADC) with 2 seats.
