An 18-year-old girl identified as Tope Fasanya, has confessed to the police in Ogun State that she had poisoned her guardian so that she could return to her biological mother.

The SSS1 student was nabbed by the Ogun State police command for attempting to kill her guardian, Mrs Esther Bada, by adding rat poison to her food.

The suspect was arrested following a complaint by the victim, who had reported that she became very uncomfortable with sharp stomach pain after eating the food served by her maid.

The Ogun police spokesman, Abimbola Oyeyemi, told newsmen on Tuesday that “when the pain was becoming so severe, she called the maid to come and eat the remaining food but she refused,” saying this made her suspect foul play on the part of the maid.

It was gathered that the victim was taken to Owode Egba general hospital, from where she was referred to the Federal Medical Centre, Abeokuta for proper medical treatment.

According to Oyeyemi, “the suspect was subsequently arrested. On interrogation, she initially denied; and she was transferred to the homicide section of the state CIID,” where she was said to have ”made a confessional statement that she actually added rat poison substance to the victim’s food.”

Oyeyemi further revealed that the suspect had been living with Mrs Esther Bada since when she was in Primary Three, when the woman was her class teacher then.

Following the death of her father, the victim, Mrs Bada reportedly volunteered to help the teenage girl by taking her in and sponsoring her education up till her present class.

“When asked why she decided to kill her benefactor, the suspect who described the victim as a very caring person, said that she only wanted to return to her mother and she can only do that if her guardian is no more.”

The Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Lanre Bankole has directed that the suspect be arraigned in court as soon as investigation is concluded.
