118 Nigerians stranded in Libya arrive in Abuja, says NIDCOM

The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) has disclosed the return of 118 Nigerians who were stranded in Libya.

NIDCOM, on social media, declared that the returnees who showed up in Abuja in the early hours of Wednesday consist of 51 males, 41 females, 17 children, and 9 children.

The Commission stated, “118 Returnees ( 51 Males, 41 Females, 17 Children, and nine Infants ) Stranded Nigerians in Libya just arrived at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja at about 1.30am local time today 17th March 2021 via Buraq Air.

“The returnees will be quarantined at the Federal Capital Territory Hajj camp for 14 days in line with the new COVID-19 protocols by the Presidential Task Force on Covid-19.”

The Chairman/CEO of NIDCOM, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, showed appreciation to all those who made their return to Nigeria possible. She urged Nigerians to abstain from futile journeys which she depicted as deadly and illegal.

She tweeted, “We@nidcom_gov thank the @IOM_Nigeria @UNmigration for making this happen. Again, we appeal to Nigerians to avoid these deadly, illegal journeys.”

The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) was enacted by the National Assembly for the Federal republic of Nigeria.

The commission provides for the engagement of Nigerians in Diaspora in the policies, projects and participation in the development of Nigeria.

It is for the purpose of utilising the human capital and material resources of Nigerians in Diaspora towards the overall socio-economic, cultural and political development of Nigeria and for related matters.

The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission is under the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs; and is constituted in accordance with and have powers and functions as conferred on it by the Act.

The functions of NIDCOM include management of funds, with respect to the day-to-day running of the Commission, mobilise and execute programmes that will compliment and advice the Federal Government on major areas of accelerated development among others.
