11-year old boy killed while defending Mom from abusive Ex

In a heartbreaking incident of domestic violence, an 11-year-old boy identified as Jayden Perkins lost his life while attempting to shield his mother and younger brother from an attack by her ex-boyfriend, just released from prison.

The Chicago Police Department reported that the assailant, identified as Crosetti Brand, 37, was apprehended on March 13, 2024, at 12:20 p.m. in the 4400 block of S. Cottage Grove Ave.

Brand faces multiple charges, including murder, following the fatal stabbing of 11-year-old Jayden Perkins and the attempted murder of his mother, Laterria Smith, who sustained critical injuries but survived the assault.

According to officials, Jayden Perkins and Laterria Smith were identified as the victims in a community fundraiser aimed at supporting the surviving family through this difficult period.

Speaking at a press conference, Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling disclosed that Brand had recently been released from prison after serving a 16-year sentence for a prior home invasion incident that resulted in injuries. Brand’s release came on the day preceding the tragic attack.

Chief Detective Antoinette Ursitti revealed that Brand had a history with Smith dating back over 15 years. He had previously violated an order of protection against him by threatening her through text messages and appearing at her residence, leading to his return to prison in February. However, Brand was paroled once again on March 12.

Tragically, on the following day, Brand forced his way into Smith’s residence as she was preparing to take her children to school. Within the home, he fatally stabbed Jayden Perkins and inflicted multiple stab wounds on Smith before fleeing the scene.

Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx expressed deep sorrow over the incident, emphasizing the innocence of Jayden Perkins and the violation of the sanctuary that should be a home.

Fortunately, Jayden’s 5-year-old brother, also present during the attack, emerged physically unharmed.

Surveillance footage captured Brand leaving the area with the knife allegedly used in the attack, providing crucial evidence in the investigation.
