Here is today’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers:

  1. Nigeria has booked a spot in the last 16 of the FIFA U-20 World Cup. The Flying Eagles played out a 1-1 draw with Ukraine in their last Group D fixture at Bielsko Biala on Thursday. It took their point tally to four, following a 4-0 win over Qatar and a 2-0 defeat to USA in their earlier games. They qualified as the best loser.

  2. The House of Representatives has moved to investigate the alleged summary execution of two Igbo men in Ogoniland by the Nigerian Army. The move was sequel to the consideration of the report of the House Committee on Army headed by Hon. Rimande Shawulu Kwevum on the investigation of the crisis in Ogoni land, Rivers State. The 6-clause report was considered and adopted by the lawmakers at the Committee of the Whole on Thursday.

  3. Barely 24 hours after his inauguration, Gov. Emeka Ihedioha of Imo has commenced demolition of monuments in the capital city of Owerri. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the demolition started on Thursday with the Akachi tower, a monument built by the immediate past administration of Mr Rochas Okorocha and commissioned by the Vice president Yemi Osinbajo on May 17. The tower which had the symbol of a hand on its zenith was erected on a dump site which was reclaimed by the Okorocha administration.

  4. Nigeria’s Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki has finally lost appointment as Ambassador-at-large of the International Human Rights Commission (IHRC) for not meeting up with the necessary protocols demanded of the office. This was contained in a letter issued and signed by head of the Nigerian Office, Dr. Friday Sani.

  5. Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Tukur Yusuf Buratai has said that Boko Haram has been defeated. According to him, Nigerian military was now fighting an international criminal gang known as Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP). The Army Chief spoke in Abuja when pupils of several schools in Abuja interacted with him.

  6. The Court of Appeal in Abuja has set aside the April 2, 2019 judgement of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in Bwari, which earlier voided Senator Ademola Adeleke’s candidacy for the 2018 governorship election in Osun State. A three-man panel of the court in a unanimous judgment on Thursday, held that the FCT High Court was wrong to have concluded that Adeleke did not complete Secondary School and that he made false representation as regards his educational qualification.

  7. The Federal High Court sitting in Ikoyi in Thursday has granted bail to Nigerian musician, Naira Marley. Justice Nicholas Oweibo, in a ruling after listening to the defence and prosecution arguments, granted the singer bail to the sum of two million naira and two sureties.

  8. Governor Mala Buni of Yobe State has taken a third wife barely 24 hours after his swearing in. The Governor tied the knot on Thursday with the daughter of his immediate past predecessor, Ibrahim Gaidam. Buni’s new wife is Ummi Adama Gaidam. Ummi Adama, who takes the position of Governor’s third wife is currently studying in Saudi Arabia.

  9. Anthony Joshua has urged Deontay Wilder not to “rob the fans” and agree to an undisputed world heavyweight title fight. Joshua wants to face his fellow champion in a battle for every major belt if he comes through Saturday night’s defence of the IBF, WBA and WBO gold against Andy Ruiz Jr. He has now appealed to WBC titleholder Wilder to reverse his decision to fight Luis Ortiz next.

  10. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has announced that all was now set for the arraignment of official of the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board, Philomena Chieshe, who last year claimed that snake swallowed N35 of JAMB fund in Makurdi, Benue State. Acting Head, EFCC Media and Publicity, Tony Orilade, made this known in a statement on Thursday, adding that Chieshe would be arraigned on Friday alongside five other defendants.
