10 things to note from Nigerian Newspapers this Wednesday morning

1. The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has declared indefinite warning strike from Wednesday, to press the federal government to implement a new minimum wage for workers. In a press statement signed by the NLC General Secretary, Peter Ozo-Eson, the congress resolved that the strike would commence in the midnight of Wednesday.

2. The Department of State Services, DSS, on Tuesday detained Mr. Baba-Inna, who is the Aide De Camp, ADC, to the wife of the President, Mrs. Aisha Buhari over an allegation of N2.5 billion fraud. Spokesman for the DSS, Mr. Nnochirionye Afunanya, said the case was handed over to the agency by the Police authority. Report claims Baba-Inna collected the money from politicians on behalf of Mrs Buhari but never remitted same.

3. The ongoing nationwide recruitment exercise being conducted by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) was disrupted for hours in Lokoja on Tuesday when one of the applicants collapsed suddenly and died. The Kogi State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Mr Olisegun Martins, who confirmed the incident, said that the applicant, a male collapsed shortly after successfully completing about a two-kilometre race.

4. The U.S. on Tuesday in Abuja signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the provision of $125,000 grant to promote Nigeria’s rock art. The project funded by the U.S. Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation seeks to create awareness on importance of rock arts and ensure proper documentation, provision of basic infrastructure and its preservation.

5. Borno State Governor, Kashim Shettima, on Tuesday, ordered the immediate dissolution of the State Executive Council. A statement issued in Maiduguri by the Secretary to the Borno State Government, Alhaji Usman Jidda-Shuwa, directed all commissioners to handover to permanent secretaries in their respective ministries before September 28.

6. Former Vice President, Alhaji Abubakar Atiku, on Tuesday in Ibadan, the Oyo state capital, insisted that President Muhammadu Buhari and his ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) have done nothing since 2015 when they came to power except noise making. Atiku made this declaration when he visited members and delegates of Oyo State ahead of the forthcoming presidential primary election of the party.

7. The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has called on the Federal Government to fulfil its side of the agreement it signed with the govt. on its welfare, else it will embark on an indefinite strike. The National President of the union, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, while disclosing this said no meaningful development will be achieved if government fails to put issues concerning education in the front burner for global reckoning and competitiveness.

8. The National Working Committee (NWC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has approved the mode of primaries for Saturday, September 29th, 2018 governorship primary elections scheduled to hold across the thirty-six states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). This information was contained in a statement by the APC spokesman, Yekini Nabena, sent to DAILY POST Tuesday afternoon. States will adopt either direct or indirect mode in the election.

9. The Advocacy for Integrity and Economic Development (AIED) has challenged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to prove its unbiased stand by releasing the total number of permanent voter’s cards collected in the seven polling units slated for supplementary election in Osun State. In a statement signed by its Director of Media and Publicity, Comrade O’Seun John, on Tuesday, AIED raised concern over the independence of the commission amid allegations of complicity by its officials.

10. Rebecca Sharibu, mother of Leah Sharibu, one of the abducted 110 Dapchi schoolgirls by Boko Haram in Yobe State, who is yet to be released has filed a suit of N500 million against the Nigerian government over its failure to release her daughter. Also joined in the suit as plaintiffs against the Inspector General of Police and the Attorney General of the Federation over their failure to ensure the release of her daughter and for failure in their statutory duties, were Mr. Daniel David Kadzai and Lift-Up-Now Incorporation, a Non-Governmental Organization in the United States of America.
