10 things to note from Nigerian Newspapers this Tuesday morning

1. Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Monday, grilled the former governor of Plateau State, Jonah Jang, now the Senator representing Jos North over alleged misuse of cash worth N10 billion while in office. Jang, who arrived the EFCC office in Abuja around 11 am, was interrogated on a number of financial deals involving him, until 6pm, when he was allowed to go home.

2. The Nigerian Immigration Service, NIS, Monday confirmed the arrest of Senator Dino Melaye at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja. Spokesman of the Service, Mr Sunday James, was arrested by Immigration officials “based on instruction”. Police, however, took over Melaye’s house after his release.

3. Suspected herdsmen on Sunday reportedly killed one of the military officers on peace keeping mission in the Logo LGA of Benue State. Report says the assailants ambushed the operative and shot him dead on Anyiin-Gbeji Road, while he was on a commercial motorcycle travelling from Uwev, in the Logo area, to Anyiin.

4. Former Governor of Lagos State and National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Bola Tinubu, has expressed belief that the Party would hold a hitch-free convention next month. According to him, the character and integrity of the convention committee members would help position the party in ways that would make it build and uphold democratic values.

5. Foremost human right lawyer, Femi Falana, has called on the National Assembly to probe the unauthorised withdrawal made by President Muhammadu Buhari from the Excess Crude Account (ECA). Reacting to the controversy surrounding the withdrawal of $496million to pay for Tucano aircrafts in the United States, Falana said the days of anticipatory approvals should be over in the country.

6. A mammoth crowd on Monday night came out at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos to welcome the Big Brother Naija stars home. Miracle, Tobi, Cee-c, Alex and Nina arrived the airport around 8:oo p.m. Nigerians who welcomed them at the airport were seen holding placards, and chanting songs for the housemates. Meanwhile, one of the housemates, Cee-c was attacked by the mob.

7. The All Progressives Congress, APC, has said the National Chairman of the party, John Odigie-Oyegun will be re-contesting for the position. The National Publicity Secretary of the party, Bolaji Abdullahi, disclosed this to newsmen in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital over the weekend.

8. A former Minister of Aviation, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, has hailed Bishop David Oyedepo of Living Faith Church and the Christian Association of Nigeria on their recent comments over the state of the nation. He quoted Rev. Sampson O. Ayokunle, CAN President, as likening the leadership style of Buhari to a blind man leading men that could see.

9. The National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, on Monday warned his party against having a false sense of ruling party in 2019. Oyegun stated that Nigerians had become wiser, hence the coming election would be a tough one.

10. A member of the National Assembly, Sen. Shehu Sani has slammed a N5 billion counterclaim in a Kaduna State High Court against Gov. Nasir El-Rufai for alleged libellous broadcast. He filed the Statement of Defence and Counterclaim in a Kaduna High Court on April 20. He is is seeking compensation for an alleged libelous broadcast maliciously made against him by the governor during a live broadcast transmitted through a radio station in Kaduna.
