10 things to note from Nigerian Newspapers this Thursday morning

1. The Nigerian Government has scrapped Award of HND Certificates by Polytechnics. The decision was reached at the Federal Executive Council, FEC, on Wednesday where the approval of a comprehensive reform of Nigeria’s tertiary education system was made. In effect, the award of HND will be limited to only the students currently admitted for the programmes.

2. President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday announced the cancellation of May 29 as Nigeria’s annual Democracy Day. Buhari in a press release on Wednesday night, said the annual celebration will now hold on June 12 in remembrance of the election which was annulled on the said date. Buhari also announced that MKO Abiola, acclaimed winner of the annulled June 12, 1993 election, will be posthumously awarded the highest honour in the land, Grand Commander of the Federal Republic, GCFR.

3. Hon Adams Jagaba, a member of the House of Representatives representing Kachia/Kagarko Federal Constituency has disclosed that majority of Nigerian lawmakers are ready to begin impeachment process against President Muhammadu Buhari. He stated that Buhari will be removed if he failed to quickly address the 12-point resolutions passed against him.

4. The Super Eagles of Nigeria were on Wednesday afternoon defeated in another friendly encounter with the Czech Republic. The Nigerian World Cup team failed to respond to a first half goal from the Czech despite their effort in the second half. The match ended 1-0.

5. The Naira, on Wednesday, fell by one point exchanging at N361.5 to the dollar at the parallel market in Lagos. The Nigerian currency had exchanged at N360.50 to the dollar on Tuesday. The Pound Sterling and the Euro closed at N484 and N420, respectively at the market.

6. Even as the news of plot to impeach President Muhammadu Buhari by the National Assembly has continued to generate tension, the lawmakers have now denied such plans. The Chairman, House Committee on Judiciary, Hon. Razak Atunwa, said the joint executive session of the two chambers of the Assembly was held to debate on national issues and no mention was made about Buhari’s impeachment.

7. President of the Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC, Comrade Ayuba Wabba has said if all members of the tripod are committed to doing what is right and working within the timeline already set, the new minimum wage can be achieved in September. He stated this on Wednesday while addressing newsmen at the ongoing 107th session of the International Labour Conference, ILO.

8. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Wednesday said the national honour proposed to be conferred on the acclaimed winner of June 12, 1993, Chief MKO Abiola, by President Muhammadu Buhari, smacks of hypocrisy and political desperation ahead of 2019 presidential election. PDP declares that President Buhari’s action merely sought to use the name and person of Chief Abiola to gain a political capital and not out of genuine reverence and recognition for him. Spokesman of the party, Kola Ologbondiyan stated this in a statement released to newsmen in Abuja.

9. Hundreds of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) at the Pompomari IDP Camp, Damaturu, Yobe State have staged peaceful protests over lack of proper sanitation in their camps. The IDPs, mostly women and children expressed their anger and dissatisfaction when members of the NYSC visited the IDP Camp to offer free medical services to them as part of the activities marking the 45th anniversary of the scheme.

10. Enugu State Government has announced the passing of Mr. Uwakwe Abugu, Chief Press Secretary to the State Governor. Mr. Abugu died yesterday in a hospital in India after a protracted illness. Late Abugu was appointed Chief Press Secretary in June 2015.
