10 things to note from Nigerian Newspapers this Thursday morning

1. It has been confirmed that eleven people were killed in a fresh crisis that rocked Makurdi, the Benue State capital on Wednesday. Rilwanu Adamu, the adviser to the Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom on Islamic affairs, said the attack happened in the state capital, Makurdi, and that it was targeted at ethnic Hausa traders. He also said two mosques were razed to the ground in the incident.

2. The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, has confirmed that they have summoned President Muhammadu Buhari and have equally called for the sack of service chiefs over the continuous killings in Benue State and other parts of the country. Dogare noted that the lawmakers could not continue to look on as people are murdered in cold blood everyday.

3. The Federal High Court sitting in Lagos Wednesday ordered the remand of Senator Peter Nwaoboshi in Ikoyi Prison. The remand order follows the arraignment of the senator by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over allegations of fraud. After listening to the arguments for and against his bail application, Justice Mohammed Idris ordered that the lawmaker be remanded in prison till Friday when a ruling would be given on whether or not to admit him to bail.

4. No fewer than 20 persons have been killed and several persons declared missing after herdsmen attacked Tse Agudu in Mbawa Council Ward, Guma LGA Area of Benue State. The armed men also set over 67 houses on fire.

5. Senator Oluremi Tinubu, from Lagos State, has warned lawmakers against linking the travails of embattled Kogi West Senator, Dino Melaye to the President Muhammadu Buhari-led government. The lawmaker, who is the wife of Bola Tinubu, national leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC, gave the warning while the senate deliberated on the matter, on Wednesday.

6. The Kano State Governor, Umar Ganduje, has said that President Muhammadu Buhari’s suggestion that former Edo governor, Adams Oshiomhole be elected APC National Chairman, was a personal opinion and not an imposition. The Governor also stated that everybody was free to contest for the seat, just as everybody was free to hold an opinion on who should lead the party.

7. Some members of Aba South constituency under the aegis of Coalition of Abia South Senatorial Movement, CASSM, have vowed to recall Senator, Chief Enyinnaya Abaribe.
   They said the lawmaker has woefully failed them. The group, to show their seriousness, on Tuesday, in Aba, commenced the distribution of recall forms to the six council areas that make up the zone for collection of signatures.

8. The National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, has denied media report that it introduced Sharia practices in the administration of the FCT orientation camp. This was made known via a statement issued by the scheme’s Director of Press and Public Relations, Mrs Aderemi Adenike, on Wednesday. She maintained that the report was false, adding that the scheme runs a prototype policy in all NYSC orientation camps nationwide.

9. Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose has raised the alarm that Nigeria was drifting towards a state of anarchy, calling on the international community to intervene and rescue the country from turning to a war zone, where mass killings is a usual occurrence. While reacting to the killing of 18 worshippers and the two priests in Benue State, he said President Muhammadu Buhari’s withdrawal of $496 million from the Excess Crude Account (ECA) and the arrest of Senator Dino Melaye, were indications that, “under this government of President Buhari, the constitution is on suspension.”

10. The Senator representing Kogi West, Dino Melaye, has claimed he is being denied access to his family, lawyers and food. Writing via his Twitter handle on Wednesday night, the Senator said some of his relatives, as well as his driver, have been in police custody since Monday.
