An autonomous car operated by Uber was involved in a car crash on Monday, killing a woman, TopNaija.ng can confirm.

The crash has been reported to be the first fatal accident involving a self-driving car and a pedestrian.

The woman had been walking with her bicycle outside the crosswalk when the car hit her.

The car had a driver behind the wheel, but was reportedly in autonomous mode when the accident occurred.

Uber soon released a statement on Twitter, writing:

Our hearts go out to the victim’s family. We’re fully cooperating with @TempePolice and local authorities as they investigate this incident.

Uber’s CEO, Dara Khosrowshahi, also tweeted:

Some incredibly sad news out of Arizona. We’re thinking of the victim’s family as we work with local law enforcement to understand what happened.

The car, a Volvo XC90, had been going 40 miles an hour when it hit its victim, 49-year-old Elaine Herzberg, and showed no signs of slowing down when it did, Tempe police spokesperson Ronald Elcock said.
