Upgrade Your Mind
The capacity to think and plan strategically is perhaps the most important single skill for effectiveness in whatever we do. The world’s greatest leaders are the leaders who always made the best and most effective decisions. As human beings, we all are mental organisms and attract our circumstances per time. Everything we are or ever will be, will always be as the direct result of the way we think over time. If we improve the quality of our thinking, improvement of the quality of our lives is inevitable.
Young People and Creativity
I once read about a series of I.Q. tests given to children between age 2 – 4 years. After the research, 95% of the children were found to be highly creative with curious, questioning minds and an ability for speculative thinking. When the same children were tested again at age 7, only 5% still demonstrated high levels of creativity. In the ensuing years, they had learned to follow the norms; “Do it the way we’ve always done it, so it will be the way it has always been” is what they had discovered and were taught.
The Risks of Conformism
As described earlier, the little children had learned to color between the lines, to sit in neat little rows, to do and say what the other kids did and said, and to do as they were told. Over time, they lost the wonderful fearless spontaneity of youth and learned to restrain ideas and intuitions that were unusual or different.
Deliberately Strive for Fresh Ideas
Most of us have had similar experiences. The “Not invented-here” syndrome in many small and large companies is simply the adult version of “not rocking the boat.” But fortunately, since creativity is your birth right, a fundamental part of your nature, you can tap into it at any time, no matter how long it has been since you really used it.
Envisage that there was an extremely easier, better, cheaper, faster way to do your job – and somebody else had already discovered it and was going to put you out of business. Imagine doing the exact opposite of what you are doing today. Allow your mind to float freely and consider how current trends will change your business.
