Groundnut is a legume crop grown mainly for its edible seeds.

It belongs to the pea and bean family, but it is considered a nut because of its high nutritional value.

It is rich in vitamins like vitamin B complex, niacin, riboflavin, thiamin, vitamin B6, vitamin B9, pantothenic acid and minerals including potassium, manganese, copper, calcium, magnesium, iron, selenium and zinc.

Here are six reasons groundnut is good for your health

Promotes healthy heart

Groundnut contains monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats (low in cholesterol) that keep the heart healthy, thereby reducing the risk of coronary heart diseases.

Improves growth

It is rich in proteins. The amino acids present in groundnut are good for proper growth and development of the body. It also repairs and replaces body cells.

Groundnut contains more protein than meat and about two and a half times more than eggs.

Serves as antioxidants

Groundnuts contain a high concentration of the antioxidant polyphenols, a compound called p-coumaric acid and oleic acid, that not only protect the heart but inhibit the growth of free radicals, keeping infection at bay.

Fights stomach cancer

Polyphenolic antioxidants are also present in high concentration in groundnuts. P-coumaric acid has the ability to limit the risk of stomach cancer by reducing the production of carcinogenic nitrous-amines.

Regulates blood sugar

Manganese in groundnuts helps in calcium absorption, fats and carbohydrates metabolism and sugar level regulation in blood.

Fights depression

Low serotonin level leads to depression. Tryptophan present in groundnut increases the release of this chemical and thus helps you fight depression.
