School vice principal shot dead in Akwa Ibom

Gunmen have killed Aniekeme Brown Essien, a vice principal of a community school in Nkek village, Ukanafun Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.

Essien was killed Wednesday morning in the school premises by the leader of a wanted criminal gang in the area.

The gang is the same that shot dead Paragi, a popular youth leader in the area.

The gunmen reportedly stormed the school and opened fire on the VP, who died on the spot.

Students and teachers ran helter skelter in fear as gun shots sounded, Punch reports.

The deceased was said to have received a letter demanding N1m or risk death.

Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Chukwu Ikechukwu, who confirmed the incident, added that the police are on the trail of the criminals.

The incident occurred three weeks after the murder of Ukanafun Local Government Council Secretary, Ime Atakpa.

Akwa Ibom State Police Command has confirmed arrest of eight persons suspected to be the killers.

Imo Commissioner of Police, Don Awunah, told newsmen that all had confessed that they were sponsored by sacked chairman of the LG, Abasiono Udomfu.
