The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, yesterday, seized about 4000 kilogrammes of tramadol that was recently banned by the Federal Government at the Muritala Muhammed Airport , Lagos.
The seized tramadol was displayed before newsmen by the NDLEA Commander at the Lagos Airport, Garba Ahmadu, who said that the interception was made through intelligence information received by the agency.
He said the banned drug was imported into the country through Etihad cargo and intercepted at the cargo shed of the Skyway Aviation Handling Company, SAHCOL, adding that for about one month, no cargo agent showed up to claim the consignments, prompting the agency to take possession of the items.
The NDLEA boss also said the tramadol consists of “capsules and tablets of 225 and 125 milligrams respectively far above the 50-100 milligrams of dosage approved by the government..
According to him, the interception goes to show that tramadol consumption “is becoming a serious problem in the country”.
