Following a surge in the online retailer’s shares ahead of its earnings report, Jeff Bezos, who is an e-commerce magnate and owner of Amazon briefly overtook Bill Gates, as the richest man in the world in July this year.

It should be noted that Jeff Bezos is a billionaire technology entrepreneur who in 1994 founded Amazon as a book store in his garage.

Now, Amazon which has a remit that includes on-demand delivery, online shopping and original television series is one of the top 50 biggest companies in the world. Apart from Amazon, Bezoz’s portfolio includes spaceflight company Blue Origin and the Washington Post.

He is also one of the first backers of the search company as well as Uber and Airnb and he holds a stake in Google.

At the beginning of the year, he was the fourth richest person in the world and he overtook Bill Gates position when the shares of Amazon rose 1.8pc to $1,071 (£820) as Amazon in which he holds 17pct state surged almost 40pc which made his wealth increase by the extra $24.4bn.

Unfortunately for him, shares later and Bill Gates reclaimed his position as the richest man in the world.

Note that Bill Gates who is worth $89.7bn has been the richest man in the world since 2013 and he only got displaced for a few hours.

According to reports, Bill Gates created the Giving Pledge along with Warren Buffet where Billionaires give at least half of their wealth to charitable causes. Bezos has not signed the pledge and has only given $00 million as opposed to Bill Gates $31.1 billion.

Therefore, it can be said that if Bezos has given a lot of his fortune to philanthropy like Bill Gates, then he would be nowhere close to being the richest man in the world.                                                                     Source: Naijapr.com
