Music sensation Mary J. Blige who turned 47 on Thursday, received her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in the recording category, joining the likes of Angela Basset, Viola Davis, Taraji .P. Henson and Jennifer Hudson on the coveted Hollywood walkway.
In her speech to the crowd, the singer cum actress who was nominated in the 2018 Golden Globes in the Best Original Song (Mighty River in Mudbound) and Best Supporting Actress (Mudbound) categories, said:
I am so grateful for this star right now because I’ve earned it probably three times, and I say that with confidence and not arrogance. I know my work and I understand what this means. Dee Rees called me and gave me a job and put my life back in motion with ‘Mudbound’.
Dee, I want to thank you for calling me. I don’t think you understand what you did… You really really helped save my life. ‘Mudbound’ opened up doors and gave me strength that I didn’t even know I had.
Blige’s longtime friend and mentor, rap mogul Sean Combs, joined the unveiling where he said, “this is about our sister getting her star, her true recognition. But this thing is also about family. We’ve been through a whole lot. We started from nothing. I used to pick Mary up from the projects. I had me a Volkswagen Rabbit. I had two rims on it because I couldn’t afford four we would just drive down the highway in New York, and we would just dream. We would say, ‘We wanna be somebody. We wanna be big, we wanna be something for our people. And we wanna come and shake up the world.’ And we did that.”
