There are a host of interesting topics to discuss with your partner which will not only keep you engaged, but will help you get to know them better and open up a lot of valuable possibilities. This article should help you put an end to a lot of mundane and boring conversations that may be threatening your relationship.

Topics to discuss with your partner is something I have always wanted to discuss. I won’t be writing as a communications expert, I will rather be sharing what has worked for me in my relationships, and I hope it can help you too.

A lot of people complain about habitual mundane chatting from boring toasters, and we have seen lovers engage in chats that never go beyond, ‘have you eaten?’, ‘what are you wearing now?’ etc. This article intends to help you fashion out new ideas to get chatty about, which won’t bore the other person.

Please note that you don’t have to do everything listed in this article. You can go with the ones that suits your personality type and also let yourself flow into the other person’s preferences.

Let’s get into it.

1.  Latch on to that compliment!

Everyone loves a good compliment. It shows you are paying attention, and can see into details. So when you are looking for topics to discuss with your partner, think about a compliment, and create a discussion around it. For example, you tell your spouse how you much you love the attire she’s wearing on a picture you just saw on Social Media, they grin for a bit, and you begin to talk about her fashion sense. She’s very likely to want to talk about it with you, and let you in into that thing you have complimented, and which she’s very impressed about. Gradually, you would be knowing a lot more about her, and she’s definitely going to warm up to you more.

2. Show some interest in their interest!

I hope you know that the prerogative of keeping a chat on does not solely reside with the guy? As a lady, you can also think of a topic you can discuss with your partner, start up a chat, and keep it going. It takes two to communicate really, so if you are setting a conversation off, you will need the interest of the other person; it won’t matter if it is the guy or lady. Now to the main thing – you need to get into the interests of your spouse. Is he into football? Try to ask him questions about his passion for football, you can try to be a fan of his favourite club too. Is she a lover of Telemundo? Ask her to tell you the plot of her favourite series. You will be surprised how well you bond when you dig into each other’s interests.

3. Get into history.

With history, you can never go wrong. It helps you understand what’s been there, settles you into the present, and invites you into what is possible in the future. Either you are creatively interested in topics about her background/history, or you are sharing yours with her. Most people love to share, so give them the opportunity. Next time you are thinking of topics to discuss with your partner, think about their background and their history.

4. Share in each others’ victories and challenges.

When you get really personal with people, you will be crawling your way into their hearts without them realizing it. You can easily inspire them and make them feel better about themselves. Talking about things you have accomplished, goals you are set to accomplish, fears you have, or challenges you envisage will open you to various ideas you never saw coming. And it will be reciprocal without you forcing it.

5. Play games.

Having fun is cool. Not every time deep stuff. Create interesting short games between you two. Try fun stuff like first person to make the other person laugh, a word game, memory game, etc. These things create awesome memories, and make you look forward to the next chat.

6. Gossip.

Regardless of who you are, we all love to get into some level of gossip, every once in a while. Gossip doesn’t always mean you are speaking badly about someone or something.  It’s just a way to share information (you have) and opinion about someone or something. So, getting into some little gossip about trending topics in the news, on social media, workplace, or in the neighbourhood is a cool way to bond with your partner. Each gossip lets you into their thought process, their sense of judgement, analytical reasoning, and love/passion for people or things.

7. Share a secret.

One (good) secret shared, begets another. When you share a secret with your spouse, it will flatter them and make them see that you trust them enough to share your deep secrets. Trust me, they will begin to feel safer with you, love you more, and trust you as well with theirs. There’s a caveat here though – if you are not yet at a level of trust you can bank on, sharing secrets should not be one of the topics to discuss with your partner.

8. Talk about your faith.

This is very important for every couple. Whether you are theists or atheists, it is very important to discuss your beliefs together. Faith is one of the most viable topics to discuss with your partner because it helps you connect on a deeper level. It is not something you talk about with a stranger on the street or someone you barely know because it is an intimate topic. In some cases, you may already know the basics, but still talking about it will give you insight into what your spouse believes in and how they govern themselves according to what they believe.

You may not be on the same page as your spouse during the conversation, but it will definitely bring you closer as you will get an up close view into their intimate thoughts, and they will get an up close view into yours. Yes, you have to share your thoughts too!

9. Talk about vacations.

Everyone feels great when they talk about vacation. And everyone has a favorite place to go. Some of us like to go to warm places, some of us like to go by the ocean, and some of us like to be in the mountains. Reflecting on our favorite place is a great way to lift our mood. That’s because we visualize ourselves on vacation when we think about our favorite destination. We can feel the atmosphere, hear the noises, and literally feel as good as we would if we were in the area that we are visualizing.

It’s kind of like a mini-vacation in itself, without having to drive or fly to get there. As you talk about your favorite vacation destinations, you’ll get a bunch of insight into each other, such as where you really feel relaxed, what activities you like to do, and what really makes you feel alive.

10. Talk about your mentors or motivations.

If you want to get some insight into who your partner wants to become, then ask who they look up to and why they look up to that person. The fact is that we look up to the people who we want to be more like, so their answer will give you a lot of insight into the goals and dreams they may have for the future. Talk about what motivates and inspires them too, and be willing to share. All of these makes you bond in ways deeper than you imagine.

That’s it for now. Thank you for reading. If you have other awesome ideas, please be kind to share in the comments section. I hope this has helped you gain new ideas of topics to discuss with your partner.

Here’s wishing you a happy chatting ahead.

Cheers!
