How Jose Mourinho’s sack divided Man United fans across Nigeria

Fans of Manchester United in Nigeria have differed over the removal of Portuguese Jose Mourinho as manager of the club on Tuesday, TOPNAIJA.NG can confirm.

United sacked Mourinho – after Sunday’s 3-1 defeat at Liverpool left the club 11 points adrift of the Premier League top four – after two-and-a-half years at Old Trafford.

Ex-Head, Technical Committee of the Nigeria Football Federation, Chris Green, insists United’s executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward, who delivered the news to the ex-Chelsea boss at the club’s Carrington training ground on Tuesday morning, is the problem and not Mourinho.

“Sacking Mourinho was a big mistake,” Green, a staunch United supporter, said. “It’s not full season yet, the team are still struggling, trying to find their feet. Mourinho isn’t the problem, I think Ed Woodward is the problem of the club with his rash decisions.

“I don’t think it’s a good decision anyway. What’s going to happen to the club now is that they will have to start all over again, which I think fans won’t have the patience for. If you look at the history of the Glazer family, even with their Dallas Cowboys, they’ve not been doing well. They don’t want to put money into the club. So, what do you expect from the team?

“The Arabs came to Man City and threw in a lot of money. So many players in United today can’t play for Man City, not to talk of Barca or Madrid. But Man Unitedare one of the biggest clubs in the world.”

Sports presenter Godwin Enakhena disagrees with Green, saying the Portuguese deserved the sack but is uncertain about the immediate fortunes of the club afterwards.

“It was high time he (Mourinho) left Old Trafford because of factors beyond him, one of which was a disunited dressing room and a lack of support from his employers. The Liverpool defeat was the last straw. This latest episode does nothing to diminish Mourinho’s quality as a top coach in world football.  Will Mourinho’s sack change the tide for United? I am keeping my fingers crossed,” Enakhena stated.

Also, Silverbird Television sports presenter Blessing Nwosu says Mourinho failed to get the “desirable results” for her darling club and thus, had to go.

“The sack came at the right time because he divided the dressing room just like he did at Chelsea, Inter Milan and Real Madrid. And he was not getting the desirable results.”

A female United fan Florence Akeju said, “He (Mourinho) should go. Since he was with the club, I didn’t see any impact he made. I think we deserve a better coach; I don’t feel bad with the decision to give him the boot.”

Another supporter of the Red Devils Abiodun Bamigboye expressed delight at the development.

I’m very happy (for the sack) because from the perspective of the players, they were not happy with Mourinho. And I know they will give their best under any interim manager that’s appointed to manage the club.”
