The executive governor of the Mexican state of Puebla, Martha Erika Alonso and her husband, Rafael Moreno, were killed Monday in a helicopter crash in central Mexico.

President Andrés Obrador confirmed the deaths on Twitter Monday evening.

He offered his condolences to the families of Martha Erika Alonso and husband Rafael Moreno and vowed a transparent investigation into the cause of the Christmas eve crash.

He added that his government’s investigation of the crash will “tell the truth about what happened and act accordingly.”

Also, Marko Cortes who is chairman of the late governor’s party, the National Action Party, said via Twitter that he was deeply saddened to hear about the accident in which Alonso, Moreno and others were killed.

“We are in mourning,” he wrote.

Alonso assumed the governorship of the east-central Mexican state on December 14 after narrowly defeating her opponent.

A day before her death, the Governor tweeted: “My best wishes at this holiday to all the Pueblana families. I know that in 2019, we expect great challenges but together we can make it a year of prosperity and peace for the state. Congratulations.”

She was the state’s first female governor. Moreno, her husband, was a senator and governor of the same state from 2011 to 2017.
