How to keep your creativity alive when inspiration does not strike

Creativity can strike randomly. Sometimes, we find an overabundance of it, other times, we can go for weeks, get stuck and unable to move forward. Here are some tips to help you when inspiration just would not strike.


1. Exercise – Get up from your computer, Get away from traffic, Leave your studio music studio and have a jog or a swim, this is a fantastic way to clear your mind. Connect a bit with natural surroundings, some time in natural surroundings especially stretching your muscles is a wonderful way to clear your mind. In removing excess energy, you will in turn remove excess baggage from your mind as the mind always follows the body.

2. Break your routine – Sometimes routines can be boring. Take a weekend off from the norm, that is do not do what you normally would do in your free time. Visit the botanical gardens near you, get away for a weekend from your house or visit a friend you haven’t seen that is quite a distance from your home, at least a 2 hour plane flight or drive. The drive in itself may prove inspirational Whatever your journey, you should come back with a fresh perspective.

3. Go to an art exhibition/gallery – Seeing art come alive in action at a concert or taking the time to visit someone’s gallery is not only a fun and wonderful way to only inspire your own creativity, but it also inspire theirs. You would definitely come back from any social gathering of artists and have more ideas to work with.

4. Switch up your morning routines – Sometimes switching up your morning routines can give you a creative head start you wouldn’t have gotten otherwise. Try getting up in the morning and jumping right into your work as opposed to a walk or a bath first, you may have some creative moments you hadn’t experienced after a shower, getting dressed, and so on.

5. Share your work with someone new – Let someone new experience your work. Seek out one of your friends or acquaintances who you have never personally shared your art with and ask them if they would like to see or hear or even taste something new you have created or perhaps revisit an old one. Get their feedback. You may find that they the most unlikely person inspires you to something entirely new either from a critique, a recommendation or a suggestion.
