China will carry out “special action” in 2018 to crack down on illegal coal mining to ensure safe production and capacity reductions, the State Administration of Work Safety said in a statement on Monday.

Coal mines that fails in safety-measures or operation-standards, including employees working longer hours than permitted, oversized-mine-capacity, will be ordered to close and rectify any violations, according to the statement.

The safety watchdog will also carry out inspections to shut so-called “zombie” mines and excess capacity at mines.
