One of the most widely heard Christian televangelists in history, Billy Graham, has died at age 99.

The Southern Baptist minister provided special counsel to U.S. presidents, from Harry Truman to Barack Obama.

Spokesperson Mark DeMoss said Graham, who long suffered from cancer, pneumonia and other ailments, died at his home in North Carolina on Wednesday morning.

Graham became one of the best-known promoters of Christianity, beginning his worldwide mission in large arenas in London in 1954.

Graham reached more than 200 million through his appearances and millions more through his pioneering use of television and radio.

Unlike many traditional evangelists, he abandoned narrow fundamentalism to engage broader society. In a 60-year career, he is estimated to have personally preached to 210 million people. Graham reached millions more through TV.
