4 things to look out for before transitioning into a new career

Like we talked about in our previous post, transitioning from one job to the next is never an easy feat. Here are some mistakes you should avoid before your career transition:

Announce Your Job Change On Your Last Day, Not Your First

On your last day of work, you could share a message on your various social networks that you are leaving, but acknowledge that you learned a lot from the experience. If you got a new job lined up, share the news, and if you do not, inform your network that you will update them in due course. And on your first day at your new job, try to keep this kind of social media activity to a minimum.

Inform Your Closest Contacts Ahead of Time

Send an email to a few persons you interact with closely, informing them of your move a few days before you announce it to the broader community. Also, explain in a few sentences how this current job is a better fit in your broader career journey. It is also better to let your most important connections know in a proactive letter.

Do not talk negatively about your previous employer

Once you have announced that you are leaving, unhappy colleagues might come to you to share their grievances. Even if you harbor similar frustrations, it is almost never worth it to indulge in a negative talking session. Talking badly about a past employer does not serve anyone well. When employees are dissatisfied, it’s often very complex and no one individual is to blame.

Be Confident

Some people fear that it will come off as a brag to announce their exciting new job on social media. Try to overcome these kinds of feelings. Most people in your community will see your job change as good news but that does not mean that everyone will respond with encouragement; some people might resent their own current work situation and react bitterly
